Race Brake Specialists - Where?

Postby Chris » Sat Aug 30, 2008 5:48 am

Hi All,

In the market to upgrade my civic's brakes from the stockers to something that'll handle the rigors of circuit racing without fading or warping.

With my current stock brake setup, after 4 laps, my brake pads are smoking and i'm experience extreme brakefade. It's bad enough that ABS doesn't even activate, coz the pads can't lock up the wheels.

i would like to keep to the 15" wheels, but to get decent brakes, i'll have to go to 330mm or 356mm. Either way, i'll have to go to minimum 17".

I haven't come across any specialist shops that do race brakes. I was hoping someone here would know a place, that will supply, fit, adjust, etc 4 or 6 pot calliper and 330-356mm rotors on the front and 2-4 pot 330mm rear brakes on my civic. Also looking at upgrading my brake master cylinder and slave to Integra Type R. If one shop could do this, with no hassles at all, would be great!

Please feel me to PM or reply.

Thanx!

Chris.

Hey man!
not to sure how much Honda stuff they dobut we have just got sponsorship by BMs (babbington motor sport)
send BART a pm as he is the owner of BMS and see what he can do. He got em a set of pads for my sil80 and they were awesome. 10000000 times better than bendix ultimates.

At the moment, all i want to upgrade is the rotors (330mm or so), calipers (4-6 pot) and braided lines.

I'll see how i got at the next track day, and if i need to upgrade my brake master and slave cylinders to DC2 Type R, then i'll probably do that too.

2 tell you the truth chris i dont think changing those parts will really help u out, the only difference it may make is less pedal effort for both. but its not really going to help u stop any better

c how u go at 1 track day, if u have the coin im sure u can fork out 2-3 grand for a 4-6 piston brake set up for the front but thats gettin pretty dam serious. seein the civic is only a light car, i think the best bet would be to give a set of DBA slotted rotors a go and get some really really good pads, the place that i get my brakes from sugguested endless which range from 165-400 for a set of pads

Hey Josh,

I've already been down that path. I went to Wakefield the Friday before i left. My brakes were hopeless after 3 laps. My brakes were smoking by the time i had finished a session. I had massive brake fade, to the point where my wheels wouldn't even lock up, they were just gone. The right hand turn before the main straight, i'm braking HARD (where ABS should kick in) and that was at the 120m marker. I would rather have more up my sleeve than being on the limit.

I'm 100% it would help me stop better. i'll have a bigger surface area for braking. i'll have greater heat dissipation. i'll have better clamping force and better distribution of clamping force. I don't understand why you would say it woudn't make a difference.....i see it like this.

Current brakes: Baby's hands...
Future brakes: Hercules hands!

See what i mean?

i doubt porsche's have massive brakes for no real stopping power reason...or to help them stop any better. i'm sure they do.

i could get some slotted rotors and some really really good brake pads, but pricing it up, it's almost $1000. I'd rather spend that extra $1000 or so and get an awesome brake setup that will totally live up to what i need...and beyond...

narr dude, wot i meant 2 say, maybe i wrote it wrong or maybe u read it wrong, i meant was that just putting soming like a bigger master cylinder to plus more fluid isnt going to help u stop better.

bigger calipers and bigger rotors and bigger pads will definatly help with more surface area and heat dispercement.

or maybe u should have just bought a corolla like my old 1 cuz that had awesome brakes from the AE111 halfcut :D

maybe have a look on some of the honda forums, maybe some DCR2 or DCR5 brakes could fit on??

At the track my brakes were sweet all day and i was doing some big pulls on them into some of the corners. No fade, no knock, nothing. Thats with standard rotors and calipers and good street pads (Lucas- from Penrith Brake and Clutch). Admittedly my car is fairly well endowed from the factory but the discs are non slotted venteds at the front and solids at the rear. Going down the DC2 route would be a good option to explore, maybe look at CRV brakes or something, you'd be surprised the parts that swap fairly easily between cars by accident. Some good fluid is essential to stop it getting spongey too, there is a reason they recommend to change it after every trackday. Perhaps simple brake ducts would help prevent them cooking so quicky? Just make something up to direct air to the front brakes and viola!

Next question: what was your lap time?
